THIS WEEK NEW Zealand’s Christchurch Press newspaper has taken a leaf out of actor Jason Statham’s book, calling hurling a cross between “hockey and murder”.

The sport has seen a surge in interest in the New Zealand city following an increase in Irish immigrants coming to Christchurch to work.

The Christchurch Press reports:

Being such a skilled and complex sport few Kiwis had been involved but spectator interest was predicted to increase as awareness of the sport caught on.
It is played fast – really fast. Players are all but sprinting up and down the field, with sticks flying and a hard ball at the centre of it all. The sport is both ruthless and fascinating.
