ANY TOM HARDY fan knows that the actor loves dogs. All dogs, but one especially.

His best canine mate was Woody (or Woodstock) who has been part of his family since 2011 – Woody was a frequent star of candid pictures of Tom…

Accompanied him on the red carpet…

And slept in his lap while he read bedtime stories on CBeebies recently.

Sadly, Woody passed away a few days ago at the age of six – and a devastated Tom has written an essay in tribute to him on his blog.

He begins by recounting the story of finding Woody while filming Lawless in Georgia, running down a busy road in the middle of the night:

When I got back to the car and sat in my seat, he lay on my shoulder and fell asleep. And snored, clearly he’d been through a lot. And now the ordeal was seemingly over enough for him to relax.
One minute he was almost dead, next terrified… After he had a power nap in the car, he’s walking with his bandy John Wayne strut under the strip-lighted aisles of this massive pet store, happy and playful.

After that, the pair formed a deep bond, with Tom calling him his “best friend”:

He has been on many sets. Met many crews. He’s been in Peaky Blinders, Legend. Everyone who met him loved him. He didn’t have a bad bone in his body. All he knew was love.
We at home are devastated by his loss… I am ultimately grateful for his loyal companionship and love, and it is of some great comfort that he is no longer suffering. The world for me was a better place with him in it and by my side.

“Thank you Woody for choosing to find us. We love you and will be with you and you with us forever,” he concludes.

You can read the whole essay here – truly heartbreaking for anyone who knows how it feels to lose a pet. RIP Woody :(
