6 David Bowie hairstyles your mammy rocked

To celebrate his new single, we look at the barnets he stole from your ma.

HE’S ROCKED SOME incredible hairstyles down through the years but has David Bowie got a lot to answer for when you look through your family photo albums?

How many of these hairstyles did your mammy, either accidentally or intentionally, strut around with?

The Mullet

You weren’t actually around to experience the shame of seeing your mother wearing a style like this but she proudly shows you photos of both herself and your father (plus your aunts and uncles) with matching mullets. This obviously only applies to mammies who were total punk rockers and far too cool for school. It was the look of 1973 for the singer.

The Perm

Mr Bowie was ahead of his time when he sported this ‘do in the 1970s. Most likely it was replicated by your mammy in the mid ’80s. You were probably making your First Holy Communion at the time and have begged her ever since to take the picture off the sitting room wall.

The Giant Blowdry

There was a time (in the late ’80s and early ’90s) when big hair ruled. This is not to be confused with lots of hair, as in TOWIE extensions. It was short hair made very big by the use of a hairdryer, a round hairbrush (ah the technology) and a very big can of hairspray.

Your mammy was probably rocking this hairstyle around the time of your Confirmation. You embraced it at the time but it now seems far more offensive that the First Communion perm. David Bowie rocked his hairdo circa 1987, trend-setting again.

The Waves

Remember when every household with a female population owned a set of those bendy foam curlers? Those were the days.

The downside was that you had to sleep in them in order to achieve a result like this but it was so worth it. You probably sported the hairstyle every day for a whole summer until your mammy decided to grow her hair out and give them a go. It wouldn’t have been cool to persist with the wavy look then. The below was Mr Bowie’s noughties look at Glastonbury.

The Crop

Too short to be given intense volume with a blowdry this look was all about the wash ‘n’ go. Your mother encouraged you to cut all your hair and replicate the style. David Bowie’s face in this picture is the reason you didn’t cave.

The Side Parting (or split as your mammy would call it)

This style would have been rocked by your mother at a time when she was experimenting with growing out the hair. It was used to try to instruct the hair to grow down instead of out. Bobby pins may have featured in the process. This was a later look for Bowie, round about 2004… he may even have copied your ma!
