IRELAND HAS RECEIVED five nods in the 2012 BAFTA awards, for films Seven Psychopaths, Anna Karenina, Here to Fall and I’m Fine Thanks.

Director Martin McDonagh has been nominated for Seven Psychopaths in the Outstanding British Film category, alongside Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin.

The film stars Irish actor Colin Farrell as well as Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken. Oh, and a particularly cool Shih Tzu.

McDonagh holds both British and Irish citizenship, and was born in London to parents from Sligo and Galway. A playwright, filmmaker and screen writer, he received one BAFTA Awards for his previous film, In Bruges, which also starred Farrell. In his category, he’s up against Anna Karenina, the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Les Misérables, and Skyfall.

Seamus McGarvey is nominated in the Cinematography category for his work on Anna Karenina (which stars Keira Knightley and Jude Law), and is up against Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Skyfall for the honour.

Meanwhile, Kris Kelly and Evelyn McGrath have been nominated in the Short Animation category for their film Here to Fall.

Here to Fall scooped top prize in the Animation Short Film Category, the Don Quijote Prize, at the Galway Film Fleadh 2012.

And finally, fellow Irish animator Eamonn O’Neill won recognition for his short I’m Fine Thanks.

The work has already claimed Best Animation in the 2011 Darklight Festival among other awards.
