Robin Williams

The youngest daughter from Mrs. Doubtfire wrote a beautiful tribute to Robin Williams

“Robin Williams, as I knew him, was warm, gentle, expressive, nurturing, and brilliant.”

LAST NIGHT, MARA Wilson wrote a beautiful blog post in memory of Robin Williams.

Who is Mara Wilson, you ask? You definitely know her.

As a child, she starred in Matilda, A Simple Wish and, of course, Mrs. Doubtfire.

While Wilson has since retired from the acting game, she is a prolific writer and last night, she took to her blog to share memories of working with Williams.

Robin would do anything to make me and the other kids laugh. Those hand puppets that dance alongside the genie in Aladdin‘s ”Friend Like Me”? That must have been his suggestion, because Robin made those in real life. He’d break them out between takes to entertain us between takes. “I don’t like you,” his left hand would say to his right. “You smell like poop!” I would laugh uproariously — I was five, so poop jokes were the height of hilarity — as his right hand yelled back “Well, there’s no toilet paper at my house!”

She notes that he “seemed to know instinctively what we would find funny, and never had to resort to saying anything that was inappropriate for children”.

Wilson recounts several anecdotes from her time spent with Williams, discusses meeting him as an adult and cautions against romanticising his struggles with mental illness.

To focus on someone’s pain instead of their accomplishments is an insult to them. As my friend Patrick put it, a person is a person first and a story second.
