THE NATIONAL GALLERY of Ireland is currently undergoing refurbishment work in its Milltown Wing.
As builders lifted the floorboards yesterday, they found these century-old tickets for a dance:
The tickets belonged to someone going to a Variety Concert and Dance in the Antient Concert Rooms on Monday, September 30 1901.
The dance was put on by the Antiquarian Cycling Society of Ireland, an organisation founded just a few months before in May 1901.
The National Gallery is now appealing for anyone who might have information about the event – or the Antiquarian Cycling Society – to get in touch with them.
The Antient Concert Rooms – pictured above – are just down the road at 52 Pearse Street. The building later became the Academy Cinema, fell out of use, was refurbished in 2007.
As far as the Antiquarian Cycling Society goes, perhaps they might talk to the gentleman with the penny farthing, in this photograph of Stephen’s Green circa 1890:
