Nirvana were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night

Joan Jett, St Vincent, Lorde and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth joined the band on stage.

NIRVANA WERE INDUCTED into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night, 20 years after the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain.

Surviving members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl came to the New York ceremony to accept the honour, which they said Cobain would have “appreciated”.

The band were inducted by R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, who said Nirvana “tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard.”

Krist Novoselic said:

Nirvana fans walk up to me every day and say thank you for the music. When I hear that, I think of Kurt Cobain.

Cobain’s widow Courtney Love was also in attendance, but was booed by some in the audience.

Four female musicians took the place of Kurt Cobain to perform the band’s most famous songs – Joan Jett, Annie Clark of St Vincent, Lorde, and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.

Joan Jett was chosen to sing the breakthrough classic Smells Like Teen Spirit, Annie Clark performed Lithium, while Kim Gordon took on Aneurysm.

New Zealand singer Lorde closed the ceremony with a version of All Apologies.

Other Hall of Fame inductees last night included ’80s glam rockers Kiss, Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band (the Boss was inducted without them back in 1999), Cat Stevens and Peter Gabriel.
