EARLIER THIS WEEK, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a pilot programme to build “micro” apartments for New York City - tiny living spaces designed for singles.
At between 275 and 300 square feet, the proposed apartments would be about the size of a spacious ATM vestibule. And at a market rate of around $2,000 (€1,633) a month, they wouldn’t be cheap, either.
Architects entering the Mayor’s competition to design the micro-units should take a cue from Gary Chang, the Hong Kong architect who turned his family’s cramped, 330-square-foot tenement apartment into a sleek living space with 24 different room combinations.
Watch the four-minute video, and you may start to believe that living in a closet-sized home really isn’t so bad at all.
