Appeal for 1,000 shaggy sheep ahead of World Shearing Olympics in Wexford

Can ewe help?

DO YOU OWN a shaggy sheep? Then your country needs ewe*.

(*Sorry)

The hosts of this year’s Golden Shears World Championships in Gorey, Co Wexford have issued an appeal for over 1,000 sheep who need a hair cut.

At least 6,000 animals are needed for the event, which begins on 22 May, but organisers have found themselves short.

They’re looking for ewes aged between 12 and 14 months, as competitors must be provided with similar shaped sheep.

George Graham from the event spoke to the John Murray Show on RTÉ Radio One this morning and explained that they are looking at supplying a “serious number of sheep”.

He also explained what’s in it for the farmers:

The farmers get their sheep shorn for free, we also have the opportunity of giving them a pour on that goes on the sheep to prevent fly strike later on in the year, they will get a couple of free passes to our gala world dinner, and also free admission passes.
They’re also supporting the biggest sheep event that has ever happened in Ireland, plus anything that’s made when we’re finished this event goes towards four charities.

The event has only ever been held in Ireland once before – also in Gorey, in 1998 – and up to thirty countries are taking part this year.

Gavin Mulch of Scotland is the defending champion.
