Annual cheese rolling race goes ahead - despite being cancelled

The official organisers of the annual event in Gloucestershire had said two months ago that it would not go ahead because they had been threatened.

DESPITE BEING cancelled by the official organisers, the annual Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling competition went ahead yesterday in Gloucestershire.

The centuries-old competition involves competitors lining up on the hill at the start of the race. A giant cheese is then thrown down the hill, after which the competitors hurtle.

The prize? Cheese.

In March, the event’s organisers said they were cancelling the competition because they had received threats of violence since announcing the introduction of an entry fee, according to the BBC. Last year, it was cancelled when insurers refused to cover the event, in which limb injuries are common.

Not deterred by either the cancellation or poor weather conditions, hundreds of people turned up to watch the event and dozens took part, This is Gloucestershire reports. There were no reports of any injures.

Cheese-chasing champion Chris Anderson, 23, from Brockworth, said after the event that although “you can cancel it officially”, it will “always go on like this”.
