THE HUMBLE CHIPPER is an Irish culinary institution – and when a place does it well it can provide you with the finest grub.
So, here are some proper old school chippers from around Dublin that you should definitely check out:
1. The Original Borza, Walkinstown
There are plenty of Borzas around Dublin – and all of them are decent standard, no doubt – but there is a reason The Original Borza in Walkinstown is a local chipper institution with queues out the door. Nothing fancy, just perfect chipper fare.
2. Sorrento, Arbour Hill
Not only does Sorrento serve the best chipper food in all of Stoneybatter, it also has beautiful Italian ice cream available as well. Perfect for when you’ve finished the main meal.
3. Mario & Son’s, Monkstown
One Yelper perfectly summed up the charms of Mario & Son’s:
This Chipper is so Yummy! The chips are scrumptious and the burgers are perfectly grilled, great service, very clean and always delicious!
What more could you want?
4. Macari’s, Glasnevin
For both DCU students and Glasnevin residents themselves, Macari’s is the go-to chipper spot. Always fresh and always absolutely delicious. If you’ve had a few drinks in The Slipper, it would be rude not to go around the corner to the delights of Macari’s after.
5. Aprile, South Richmond Street
Aprile has won its reputation as one of the finest post-night out chippers in town – and deservedly so. But it’s a top notch chipper experience all the time. There aren’t too many traditional chippers this close to the city centre, so Aprile stands out.
6. Savoy Take Away, Mountjoy
A Northside classic. Close to Croke Park, the Savoy might not be as glamorous as its cinematic namesake in town – but it certainly knows how to do quality chipper grub.
7. Fairview Grill, Dublin 3
The Fairview Grill does everything a proper chipper does best – with a few home comfrots thrown in for good measure, as this Yelp review breathlessly explains:
It’s rare to find a neighbourhood chipper where you can sit down to enjoy your meal, on actual plates with real cutlery, but this is one such hero.
8. Aprile, Stillorgan
Completely separate to the Aprile in town, this Stillorgan takeaway is loved by locals. There’s an Italian restaurant upstairs, but we know it’s the chipper you’re after.
9. The Golden Chip, Phibsboro
As one reviewerput her experience in The Golden Chip:
My friends and I popped in here late one Saturday night recently and it was only hopping! Not only that but everyone, including the staff, was super-friendly. Like the rest of the punters we’d had a few pints and were starving so we got chips, curry sauce burgers and kebabs and brought them home to eat on the couch.
A greater chipper story has never been told.
10. The Lido, Pearse Street
Pearse Street’s finest purveyor of fast food - a much better choice than Apache across the road for proper munch.
11. Fortes, Dorset Street
A good, solid takeaway on Lower Dorset Street. Always there for you when you need your chipper fix.
12. Super Miss Sue
Fancier than nearly every other chipper on this list – but Super Miss Sue makes it in on sheer quality alone. The restaurant side is delicious, but go in the chipper side to get your hands on the takeaway grub that you’re after. Top notch, and really central.
13. Presto, Ringsend
Across from Slattery’s pub in Ringsend, Presto has gained itself a deserved reputation as the finest chipper in the area. As one Yelper says:
Great chipper. Garlic sauce to die for. Leo and his staff are second to none. Always a friendly smile greeting you here.
14. Macari, Inchicore
Beating off all the competition in the Inchicore area, according to this Yelper:
In an area full of take away spots, Macaris stands out among the competition. Although you can get pizza and chips at a dozen other local shops, Macaris is the only chipper in Inchicore where you can get a proper fish and chips, burger, or southern fried chicken.
15. Fish Bar, Cabra
Its exterior might not be as fancy as others on this list, but inside there is no problem with their chipper grub. A must try.
16. Roma II
Wexford Street wouldn’t be the same without Roma II. Amid all your delicious but fancy eateries lining the busy street, Roma II stands out as a beacon of quality chipper food. And it’s open really late every night as well, which definitely helps given its location.
