Daily Mail in hot water over pictures of 10-year-old mother

British newspaper printed pictures of 10-year-old who recently gave birth.

THE DAILY MAIL may be prosecuted by the Spanish authorities after the newspaper printed photos of a 10-year-old who gave birth recently, according to the Olive Press, a Malaga-based English-language newspaper.

The Daily Mail printed pictures of the girl with the 13-year-old father of her child, who was born on October 26.

The Prosecutors’ Office in Seville now, reportedly, plans to bring  charges of invasion of privacy of a minor. The Spanish Attorney General in Madrid will decide whether legal action should be taken.

The Mail first revealed the birth on November 2. However, as Roy Greenslade in the Guardian explains today, “It was its follow-up five days later, with pictures of the couple, that appears to have upset the Seville legal authorities.”

The family moved to Spain about a month ago and the girl gave birth in hospital in the city of Jerez de la Frontera. “She’s doing well and is very happy with her daughter,” the girl’s mother said at the time to Spanish newspaper El Pais.

The story has caused uproar in Spain.
