MUSICIAN DEADMAU5 HAS announced he’s quitting Twitter, but says it’s got nothing to do with a recent I.R.A. mix up.

The producer and performer, whose real name is Joel Zimmerman, sent out a tweet last night in which he used the Latin word “ira”, which translates as the deadly sin “wrath”.

The tweet was soon the subject of many “up the ra” responses and similar references to Irish republicanism, which prompted this follow-up tweet from the musician:

@CillianDeBurca @CillianDeBurca

His question elicited even more responses about the meaning of the phrase “up the ra”, while others mocked up imagery of him as a member of the Irish Republican Army.

Deadmau5 eventually responded with:

for the halfwits, “Ira” is latin for Wrath. can i stop explaining now?

This evening, he has deleted all of his previous tweets and posted an explanation on his tumblr site:

I’m no longer going to be managing my own Twitter account for “deadmau5″. I’m going to let management deal with that account. My reasons are my own, not because because of something I said, not because of this hilarious I.R.A. vs “ira” craic….

Deadmau5′s Twitter account has been in the headlines before.

He proposed to celebrity tattoo artist Kay Von D via Twitter last December:

Twitter Twitter

They have since split.
