A REPRESENTATIVE FROM the brand new ‘Don’t Give A Feck’ Party is a serious candidate in the Meath East local elections for 2014.
What started off as a joke for Dave Keaveney from Duleek, Co Meath, is now a real election campaign – and he wants to win.
It began four weeks ago when Keaveney jokingly mocked up a poster of himself as a local election candidate for the ‘Don’t Give A Feck’ Party and hung it in his dry cleaning business in the town.
He decided to run for real after customers told him he should give it a try, and set up a Facebook page to promote his campaign.
On his page, he posts tongue-in-cheek fake policies “to make people laugh”.
Keaveney’s campaign slogan is “I promise to do nothing for you and I’ll try my very best to do it”. He explains what he means by it:
If I promise to do something for you I’ll try to do it, and if I can’t I’ll sit down with you and explain why I can’t do it. I won’t come to your door and promise you things and then go off up to Dublin and you won’t see me for five years. At least I’m being honest.
His campaign base is in Xtra Clean, the dry cleaner and laundrette he has owned in Duleek for the past 15 years.
People come in here every day to tell me their problems. I’m in the same boat as everyone – with the banks and the bills, we all have the same problems.
The main issues he wants to tackle is unemployment – he wants to set up a place for unemployed young people to go instead of “hanging around” and encourage companies to set up in the town.
Keaveney says he’s gotten a great deal of support from the people of Duleek, who have been hanging up posters and posting good luck messages Facebook page.
I just want to put a smile back on people’s faces.
