Eastenders featured two characters having sex next to a dead body, and viewers aren't happy

No, really.

LAST FRIDAY’S EPISODE of Eastenders featured a scene in which two characters, Ben Mitchell and Paul Coker, appeared to do the nasty.

Next to a dead body. In a funeral parlour.

Oh.

The scene didn’t sit well with people at home with viewers describing it variously as “a new low” and “ridiculous”.

People straight up couldn’t deal.

Please now.

In fact, Ofcom reportedly received 48 complaints from viewers about the scene.

We had 48 complaints about the scene where a couple had sex in a funeral parlour, when there was an open casket in the room.

Well, when you put it like that…

However, Eastenders has defended the scene against critics who said it was too explicit for its pre-watershed timeslot.

The millions of regular EastEnders fans who tune in each week know and expect dramatic storylines. We are always mindful of our time slot in which we are shown and the scenes in question were implied and not explicit.

Neither Harry Reid nor Jonny Labey, the actors who play Ben Mitchell and Paul Coker, have commented on the latest furore. But many have speculated that the scene wouldn’t have caused the same uproar had it featured a straight couple.

This is not the first time the characters in question have been subject to criticism.

Back in June, Harry Reid took to Instagram to say that he found some of the reaction to a gay kiss on Eastenders “upsetting”.
