EVERYONE’S FAVOURITE CHATSHOW host Ellen Degeneres has expressed her joy at Leo Varadkar taking his boyfriend to meet US Vice President Mike Pence.
Pence has previously been criticised for his views and legislative record on LGBT rights, but he reportedly told Varadkar last year that his partner would be welcome at this year’s breakfast. Varadkar took him up on the offer, with his boyfriend Matt Barrett making the journey over to Washington for the St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
During the meeting, the Taoiseach noted that currently in Ireland, politicians are judged by their actions, and not their sexual orientation, skin tone, gender, or religious beliefs.
Ellen tweeted a link to a Buzzfeed article entitled ‘Ireland’s Openly Gay Prime Minister Brought His Boyfriend To Meet Mike Pence’ and stated that the meeting makes her ‘very happy’.
Leo and Matt’s visit made headlines across the world as a good example of progressive politics.
