HE WILL BE remembered fondly, just not for his looks. Elwood, the winner of the World’ Ugliest Dog competition in 2007, has died at the tender age of eight.
The Chihuahua and Chinese Crested mix is said to have passed away unexpectedly, with his owner Karen Quigley telling the Chicago Tribune that it was “all very sudden”.
It is believed that the dog was suffering from a form of cancer, and died on Thursday in his adoptive mother’s arms.
Elwood was adopted by Quigley in 2006 after his breeder thought he was too ugly to sell and planned to euthanise him.
Quigley wrote a book after her pup’s Ugliest Dog win detailing the fans he gained from the competition and the message of acceptance it sent. She said:
He was the most beautiful dog I’ve ever seen. He taught children it’s OK to be different.
The New York Times ran an obituary for the peculiar pup yesterday.
