"Emotional" love letters from James Dean up for auction

The letters were sent to his on-off girlfriend of two years in the early fifties, and reveal the strains of working in Hollywood.

LOVE LETTERS THAT James Dean wrote to his girlfriend back in 1954 are up for auction.

Dean died a year after he wrote the letters in 1955 at just 24 years of age.

Autograph Magazine reports that the auction will take place in Christie‘s and will involve three handwritten letters that the Hollywood actor sent to his on-off girlfriend of two years, Barbara Glenn.

The auction house says the “emotional” letters “reveal the strains of Dean’s work and their long-distance relationship”.

Also on offer will be private photographs of the couple that were owned by Barbara’s son, filmmaker Keith Gordon.

The lot even includes a photograph of Cisco, a horse that Dean bought in 1954.

Dean’s first role in a Hollywood movie was as Cal Trask in East of Eden. It was released just six months before he died in a tragic car crash.
