An Indian mam put a gay marriage ad in the paper for her son

Homosexuality is illegal in India.

HOMOSEXUALITY IS ILLEGAL in India, but that didn’t stop one Mumbai mother taking out an ad in the paper seeking a groom for her son.

Padma Iyer placed the ad in the tabloid Mid-Day, which read:

Seeking 25-40, well-placed, animal-loving, vegetarian GROOM for my SON (36, 5’11″) who works with an NGO.

According to the Hindustan Times, her son Harrish Iyer had already received about 70 proposals by today.

Harrish Iyer is a well-known gay rights activist in India.

He’s tweeted in response to the criticism of the reference to caste (India’s system of social stratifcation) in the ad, pointing out that most marriage ads in India make reference to caste:

Reuters reports that since a ban on homosexuality was reinstated in 2013 there has been a rise in intimidation and abuse towards LGBT people.
