NOW, WE’RE RELUCTANT to have a cheap laugh at other people in the media just for the sake of it. These days it seems it’s all about the print-versus-online debate and, to be perfectly blunt, there are advantages to each that the other can’t match.
That said, given how Jennifer Aniston’s sole function over the last seven years seems to have been to provide celebrity gossip magazines with an anguished ‘when will I ever find love again?’ front page picture, we had to admit that this pic raised a chuckle.
Grazia’s UK edition is published on Tuesdays, meaning it goes to print over the weekend, with its cover probably put together on Saturday while the finer details and smaller pieces are slotted in on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
That means it’s subject to the occasional breaking news story that might have emerged after it was put to print on Sunday. In this case, that was a very unfortunate development – as the front page carried what appeared to be a direct contradiction of the biggest story.
“IT’S OVER?” shrieks this week’s cover headline, revealing “Jen’s turmoil as Justin runs back to ex” – claiming that Aniston’s other half, actor and writer Justin Theroux, was on the verge of going back to a former love and leaving Jen jilted once more.
That would be all well and good – and, sadly, not the first time that the Friends actress would have been on the wrong end of a romantic let-down – if it weren’t for the fact that on Sunday, Jen and Justin announced that they were getting married.
While the final touches were being put to Grazia, Justin was having a bash to mark his 41st birthday – at which he popped the question to Aniston, who was no doubt thrilled to do so.
Luckily for Grazia, its website gives it a chance to make some explanations – which are masterfully spun into an explanation that the magazine’s contents feature “all the latest in the lead up to this dramatic U-turn”.
The Aniston story, despite being the cover feature, doesn’t make it into the title of Grazia’s weekly plug – that’s reserved for a second story about Demi Moore seeking hynpotherapy to ‘delete’ her memories of Ashton Kutcher, and a spread about the gold-winning ladies of Team GB.
Nicely played.
