In my household, hair ties have always been called ‘bobbles’. However, when I ventured out of Cork, I quickly realised that the common vernacular when it comes to elastics is far wider than I could have imagined
First, there’s bobble’s close confidant, ‘bobbin’.
My issue here is that such a thing as a ‘bobbin; already exists, and it’s a piece of sewing apparatus not suitable for putting your hair in to pigtails.
Second favourite, by a wide margin, is the frankly baffling term, ‘gogo’.
What are the origins of this? “Go go gadget, tie my hair up?” I don’t think so.
I’ll take ‘scrunchie’ over ‘gogo’, despite the fact that a scrunchie only applies to a select few hair ties.
Forget Brexit – nothing divides a nation quite like the debate over what word is correct when it comes to the thing that you have around your wrist at any given moment should their be a hair-related emergency.
