THE DUKE OF Cambridge has taken part in his first Trooping the Colour parade in London today celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s official birthday.

The traditional birthday celebrations of what the BBC described as ”pomp and pageantry” saw the newly-wed Prince William ride on horseback for the spectacle.

His new wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, rode in a horsedrawn carriage with Prince Harry and the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla.

Later in the day, members of the royal family gathered on the balcony at Buckingham Palce to watch a flypast by the Royal Air Force.

The ceremony marked the 85th birthday of the Queen – although her actual birthday is on 21 April – and came a day after the Duke of Edinburgh’s 90th birthday.

The day is also notable for the Queen’s birthday honours list which this year included most notably a knighthood for showbusiness stalwart Bruce Forsyth who has been in entertainment for a remarkable 70 years.

Colin Firth, Brian Ferry and the current  governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, also made the honours list reports the Telegraph.

The ceremony dates back to 1748 and the Queen and her husband watched as the ceremonial flag was paraded past her with thousands of spectators cheerfully lookeing on.

All in all, it was a jolly good show. Here’s some images from the day (All photos: Press Association):
