Ivan Yates 'would like' to succeed Browne on TV3

Ivan would be keen to continue substituting for Vincent Browne – though other presenters got higher ratings.

NEWSTALK host Ivan Yates has told TV3 he would be willing to take over from Vincent Browne on the station’s night-time news show – further increasing the chances he might be set to leave the radio station.

Today’s Sunday Tribune says Yates said that while he was “not saying Vincent should be looking over his shoulder, but I am open to the idea.

“While I am happy for Vincent to have the gig, it is something I would like to again and on an occasional basis, if TV3 would have me.”

The comments could be interpreted as a come-and-get-me plea to the station, with Yates already having asked Newstalk bosses to assign him a different slot on the station after becoming fed up with his 3:50am starts ahead of his 7am breakfast show.

While the average viewing figures attracted by Yates were almost identical to those who regularly watch Vincent Browne host the show – with a peak audience of 135,000 being above Browne’s average , his figures were lower than those recorded by some other substitutes.

In particular, Irish Independent journalist Sam Smyth attracted 124,400 on his first stint substituting in early August, while Star editor Ger Colleran attracted 123,300 during his week at the helm.

Kevin Myers managed 111,600 while Sarah Carey managed 110,700 and 104,100 during her two separate weeks in the presenter’s chair.

Viewing figures for July 19 – September 6:

  • Sarah Carey (July 19-22): 110,700
  • Kevin Myers (July 26-29): 111,600
  • Sam Smyth (Aug 3-5): 124,400
  • Ger Colleran (Aug 9-12): 108,500
  • Sam Smyth (Aug 16-19): 108,500
  • Sarah Carey (Aug 23-26): 104,100
  • Ivan Yates (Aug 30-Sept 6): 117,200

A representative for TV3 has dismissed any rumour that Browne would be leaving the show for good, saying that much of the feedback received by the station actually related to how viewers missed Browne and had enquired when he would be returning.

Browne himself has advised not paying much attention to the viewing figures, telling the Tribune that “they are hugely influenced by what is on the competition”.
