THE MAN WHO voiced the famous Sesame Street character The Court has died, it has been announced.

Jerry Nelson, a puppeteer who also performed on Fraggle Rock, died on Thursday. He was 78.

As well as playing Count von Count, he also performed as performed Gobo Fraggle on Fraggle Rock as well as a host of other characters including The Muppet Show‘s Sgt. Floyd Pepper of the Electric Mayhem band; “Pigs in Space” stalwart Dr. Julius Strangepork; Kermit the Frog’s nephew Robin; and Gonzo’s girlfriend Camilla the Chicken.

His career also includes roles including “Robocop 2″ and “The Nail Gun Massacre” according to the The Wrap.

But his most famous role was perhaps that of the Count von Count who had an instantly recognisable laugh and a love for numbers.

Nelson voiced The Count, as he was known, up until he retired in 2004.

Here he is duelling with another famous Sesame Street character, Cookie Monster:

In a statement posted to its website, the cast and crew of Sesame Street said they deeply mourned the loss of Nelson, a native of Tulsa in Oklahoma:

“He will forever be in our hearts and remembered for the artistry in his puppetry, his music, and the laughter he brought to children worldwide through his portrayal of Count von Count, Herry Monster, Fat Blue, Sherlock Hemlock, the Amazing Mumford and many other beloved characters.

“We will miss his extraordinary spirit and the joy he brought to our Street,” a statement said.
