John Legend is set to play Jesus in a live musical of Jesus Christ Superstar

Does this make Chrissy Mary, then?

JOHN LEGEND IS joining Alice Cooper (no, really), as part of the cast of NBC’s next live musical project, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’.

Having won a Tony, an Oscar and 10 Grammys, we’d be fairly certain he’s more than capable of filling Jesus’ massive sandals.

NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a statement:

We’re all overjoyed to have world-class musical artist and producer John Legend starring as Jesus.”

Meanwhile, John said:

I’m thrilled to join the cast of this production of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert! It’s such a powerful, meaningful musical and I’m humbled to be part of this performance.
We’ve already formed an incredible team, and, as we finish casting, I’m certain we will put together some of the greatest talents around to do this work justice.”

The rock opera will be staged in front of a live audience at the Marcy Armory in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood.
