YESTERDAY, IT WAS announced that Kel Thompson, orange soda aficionado and star of Kenan & Kel, would be returning to television in a Nickelodeon sitcom this autumn.

Mitchell is set to star in a new children’s show called Game Shakers as a rap superstar who partners with two 12-year-old girls on a gaming company. (Sure look, it’s for children.)

The news has elicited much excitement from fans who missed the originator of the catchphrase, “Who loves orange soda?”

But we know what you’re thinking — what has Kel Mitchell been up to all these years?

We have answers.

If you were around in the 1990s, chances are you have fond memories of  Kenan & Kel.

The show, which ran from 1996 – 2000, starred Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell as two besties who got up to all sorts of shenanigans. Setting up a nightclub in a corner shop, ruining Thanskgiving, downing orange soda — that kind of thing.

Almost 20 years on, it continues to occupy the minds of 90s kids all over the world.

After the show ended, Kenan Thompson wound up forging a very successful TV career and has been a cast member on Saturday Night Live for the past 12 years.

Kel Mitchell, however, disappeared from the limelight, causing people to wonder whatever became of him.

At one point, there was even a rumour that he had died in 2006.

Having the news of your death circulated in a chain mail? The epitome of stardom.

For years, people operated under the assumption that Kel Mitchell was dead.

But Mitchell was very much alive. In fact, he has actually been working quite steadily since the end of Kenan & Kel, albeit probably not in anything you have ever heard of. (Unless you watched something called Married, For Real?!)

Unfortunately, he has not stayed friends with Kenan Thompson.

In 2012, Mitchell told TMZ that Thompson wanted nothing to do with him, dashing all hopes for a Kenan & Kel reunion.

The truth is Kenan does not want to be seen with me in any form of media, or even have my name mentioned around him.

*wipes tear*

And in 2014, Thompson refused to acknowledge him in a video recorded for the Kids’ Choice Awards.

Mitchell wasn’t bitter, though. Just hurt.

In spite of Thompson’s rude ‘tude, Mitchell continued to plug away and it now looks like things could finally be coming up Kel.

Here’s his reaction to the news of his new TV show yesterday.

#blessed

He seems delighted anyway. Welcome back, Kel.
