Remember the amazing musical guests from teen sitcoms?

When you could catch your favourite band on your favourite TV show? Those were the days.

BACK BEFORE THE internet was a thing, musicians had fewer avenues to getting their songs to the masses.

One of the staples of the 90s/00s teen sitcom was a musical guest, who randomly popped up in show’s local café or bar to play a gig for the main character – propelling themselves and their music into the charts at the same time. Who cares if they were hamfisted and completely out of the blue most of the time? It was cool.

Here are some of the weirder musical interludes from your favourite teen shows.

Britney Spears on Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Emma Turnbull

Celebrity guest stars were common in Sabrina – but nothing can top the strangeness of Britney’s appearance in Sabrina’s living room, which acted as a sort of dual promotion for “Drive Me Crazy”, the name of both Britney’s single and Melissa Joan Hart’s film. Subtle.

The Thrills on The OC

Gamalito19

Getting a song on The OC was the highest honour a band could achieve in the ’00s, so it’s no doubt Irish band The Thrills (where are they now?) were delighted to be the soundtrack to some underage drinking in The Bait Shop.

Aaron Carter in Lizzie McGuire

Young Aaron performed his cover of “I Want Candy” on the show, while Lizzie and Miranda danced in the background. This cameo was not at all linked to the fact that Hilary Duff and Aaron Carter were dating (and two thirds of a love triangle with Lindsay Lohan) at the time, we presume.

The Corrs on Beverly Hills, 90210

Flor Baguyo

The kids of 90210 rang in the New Year at The Peach Pit to the strains of “Forgiven, Not Forgotten”. Wouldn’t be our first choice of a tune to get the party started, but each to their own.

LFO on The Amanda Show

LFO (that stands for Lyte Funky Ones, obviously) performed their hit “Girl On TV” on the Amanda Show back in 2001, surrounded by dancing lobsters and extremely awkward-looking cast members slowly clapping along to the mid-tempo song.

They just don’t make ‘em like they used to any more.
