7 Oscars moments that will make you cringe (or chuckle)

The times when we covered our eyes. Or rolled about laughing.

LIKE EVERY AWARDS ceremony the Oscars always has its fair share of dramas, mishaps and downright cringe-y moments.

Here are some of our favourite chuckleworthy encounters from the last few years. Add your own in the comments…

1. Angelina Jolie’s leg taking on a life of its own

For a brief few weeks last year, Angelina Jolie’s right leg became more famous than the body it was attached to.

Later in the night male Oscar winners mimicked the actress posing it up at the podium and hundreds of genius spoofs (like Keith Lemon’s video below) were dreamt up online. We’re guessing there’ll be no slit in Angie’s dress this weekend.

2. The on-stage streaker back in the day

It’d almost be worth watching all the boring categories just in case something as bizarre as this streaking incident unfolds in this year’s live ceremony. It’s unlikely we must say but you never know. Full marks to David Niven for keeping his cool and reacting perfectly.

3. Anne Hathaway and James Franco ironically singing about keeping people awake

It might have seemed like a good idea at the time. Who doesn’t love a bit of a Grease homage? But following their slating as Oscar hosts 2011 the pair must have regretted shimmying around dressed like T-Birds while joking about keeping their audience awake. Perhaps if they’d remained in these characters for the duration of the show things would have been a lot more interesting, or a little more interesting at least.

4. ‘Get off the stage’ say Jack Black and Will Ferrell

We all wish people would wrap up their acceptance speeches before that embarrassing moment when the music starts playing over them and everyone begins to feel a little bit awkward about their rushed attempt to cram in the names of people they went to school with, followed by their old babysitter and then their neighbours from childhood. Know when to stop people. And if in doubt have a watch of this.

5. Meryl’s ‘her again’ speech

Now Meryl Streep can usually get away with saying anything that she wants but we’re not sure that she should have vocalised her thoughts when she admitted that she felt everyone would be thinking ‘her again’ when she won her Oscar for The Iron Lady. Yes Meryl, we know it wasn’t your first shiny Academy Award thingy but spare a thought for the other nominees who had already polished a shelf in their bare trophy cabinets.

6. Ben Stiller takes on Avatar

It’ll be hard for anyone to top Ben Stiller’s Avatar tribute while presenting the award for Best Achievement in Make-Up but let’s hope someone goes the extra mile come Sunday night.

7. Leading ladies get majorly tongue-tied

Every year somebody inevitably cries, says something extremely ill-advised or trips over their own tongue and struggles for breath. Here are lots of people doing just that. Enjoy!
