The fractious discussions on a new registration fee may lead to compromise within the government parties.

“IT’S A CASE of either slash our wrists, or someone’s going to come and stab us in the heart.” Those are the words of the Green Party’s Paul Gogarty, who has told the Dáil’s debate on the economic outlook that Ireland needs to do itself harm if it wishes to avoid having outside interference in its affairs. Gogarty also added his voice to calls for ministers to lose their automatic right to a Mercedes car, saying that a fleet of cars should be pooled for use as ministers need them.

THERE’S MUCH A DO ABOUT IVOR. Tweeting earlier Senator Paul Gogarty wrote “if disreputable senators can’t be forced to resign their seats, surely an investigating committee could suspend without pay continuously ;-)”

Gogarty later went on Liveline and told Joe Duffy that he had proposed that the Oireachtas again investigate the allegations that he submitted invoices amounting to €3,000 from a company that has not traded in over a decade. “I’ve written to the clerk of the seanad asking for a formal investigation” Deputy Gogarty said.

Calling Senator Callely to resign, Gogarty said: There may be, as the last speaker said, an explanation.
“If this was the UK, if a person feels they are innocent, sometimes they resign first in order to answer questions.”

Gogarty said that the Oireachtas does have the powers to suspend the senator again. “[Senators] can be suspended on an ongoing basis and surely they would resign without facing that kind of humiliation.

“You’re talking about a very brazen individual here, Trevor Sargent made a mistake and he stepped down immediately, Willie O’Dea stepped down after a couple of days.”

This morning, David Norris has also called for the claims in the Irish Mail on Sunday to be investigated as has Michael Crowe, the Fianna Fáil mayor of Galway.

GREEN PARTY TD Paul Gogarty said the party would happily “go to the country” if Fianna Fáil fail to bring forward legislation on corporate donations.

Gogarty was speaking to RTÉ News, where he said that legislation was due to be published on the matter in the Autumn. However, Fianna Fáil backbencher Bobby Aylward said there was no need to change the law. He said rigorious regulations were already in place.

The Green Party received an assurance that legislation on the issue would be brought forward when they renegotiated their programme for government last year. There were suggestions that a central fund could be used to would allow companies to contribute to political parties, with money being distributed based on the size of the party.

Earlier this week Lucinda Creighton criticised Fine Gael for it’s ‘cute-hoor politics’ and taking donations from NAMA’d property developers. This was defended by Phil Hogan. When Michael Noonan was leader of the party he refused to accept corporate donations, however Enda Kenny rolled back on this when he became leader.
