Here's how a joke on Twitter turned into a Netflix movie starring Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o

It hasn’t even been written yet, and people already know it’s their favourite film.

A PHOTOGRAPH OF Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o was taken in 2014 at a Miu Miu fashion show and the internet instantly started joking about the potential that the pair had to star in a movie together. This is the photo that started it all:

Twitter user @1800SADGAL shared the concept after seeing it expressed by Tumblr user Roxy McDonald in 2015.

She wrote that “Rihanna looks like she scams rich white men and Lupita is the computer smart best friend that helps plan the scans (sic)”. Everyone found the caption hilarious and agreed, which led to the tweet getting almost 100,000 retweets and over 211,000 favourites.

But nobody saw what was coming next.

Lupita came across the tweet and decided she was in. She tagged Rihanna and said “I’m down if you are.”

To which Rihanna replied, “I’m in Pit’z” (which is clearly her nickname for Lupita).

Now a month later, Netflix have bought the film project.

Netflix have yet to comment on the deal, but it is thought that Issa Rae, writer of the U.S. series ‘Insecure’ will be a writer on the project and last night Ava DuVernay, director of ‘Selma’, who had previously hinted that she was ready and waiting to be involved shared the story on Twitter.

People are calling this the single greatest achievement of Twitter and it sure does beat 3.5 million retweets for chicken nuggets.

The reaction to it has been hilarious:

James Bond who?

And it has inspired some amazing fan art:

This movie is guaranteed to be amazing, simply based on the fact that it’ll star Rihanna and Lupita. Just think of the outfits.

They definitely need to incorporate the contributions from the young black Twitter users who are making amazing fan art and coming up with incredible and hilarious ideas for the movie. Does the world deserve something as pure as this? I don’t know. But we certainly need it.
