ROSE MCGOWAN, ONE of the first silence breakers of the #MeToo movement, has accused the Democratic party of protecting her abuser Harvey Weinstein.
Speaking at a promotion for her new book Brave at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the actress said:
His [Harvey's] protection came from the Democratic Party, far more so than Hollywood. He was their de facto cult leader and their star, and thanked as many times as God at the Oscars – a dead heat.
But it was the Democratic party and the operatives there. He set up this whole operation to do this and he tended to go for anybody, the scale, the sheer magnitude, it’s probably in the thousands. He just f***ked with the wrong person.
Weinstein was one of the Democrats’ most high-profile donors.
He’s thought to have individually given €790,000 to the Democratic party and to have raised nearly €1.2million through bundler donations between 1990 and 2016.
McGowan is one of around 90 women who have accused the Hollywood producer of sexual harassment and abuse. Weinstein continues to deny all allegation of non-consensual sex, despite facing charges in both New York and Los Angeles.
The American actress also spoke about Republicans and Trump.
She explained that she believes Trump’s presidency could be a blessing in disguise for stripping away the veil and revealing the true nature of many politicians:
I do think Trump has done us a favour, if we can survive him. Showing us so clearly what racism is, showing us so clearly what sexism is and the thing is he’s doing what they all did before he just says it.
So many of his predecessors, they worked under those same auspices [and] he’s just so dumb he actually says it. He let’s us all in on the secret.
McGowan was born into and grew up in the Children of God cult and claimed that Donald Trump’s behaviour is like that of a cult leader.
I would say Trump supporters, it’s largely a cult. He’s their leader, he uses trigger words, he says the same things over and over.
McGowan laid bare how difficult an experience it’s been since the abuse allegations came to light:
This last year, the stress of it almost snapped me. I’m strong, but it was really hard. It felt like I was manning the Titanic and failing to let it sink.
I’m only coming out of it calmly now but it was a real nail biter… I just wanted it to stop and I wanted the lying to stop and I wanted the protection to stop and I wanted to stop being looked down on and so many others, because the whole casting couch idea, that’s such a myth its more like the rape couch. Hollywood is notorious for it
Saw Rose McGowan today at the Edinburgh book festival. She is an inspiration to us all.A brave woman who dared to speak, now unable to stay in one place because of those in power who want her silenced. .@rosemcgowan bows to a standing ovation after her event with brilliant @afuahirsch. Clearly very inspiring & necessary for many in the crowd. I walked back with a friend talking about re-wiring & re-cataloguing. And ideas & conversation are exactly what @edbookfest is about ⭐️ pic.twitter.com/pB0Xyet3ms— Sam Woods (@same_woods) August 14, 2018
