Saoirse Ronan had to explain the pronunciation of her name again on Sharon Osbourne's US chat show

Every year.

WE’RE COMING UP to awards season and Saoirse Ronan has a new critically acclaimed film out – so that can only mean one thing:

The annual garbling of Saoirse’s first name by everyone on TV.

But this year she’s getting proactive by sending the message out early on how to get it right.

And the campaign started with an appearance on CBS chat show The Talk

Sharon Osbourne came straight out with it:

“People still have trouble pronouncing your name”

And revealed she *still* doesn’t fully get it:

“Ryan Gosling provided a hint that I just don’t get”

Saoirse explained Gosling’s famous rhyming technique:

About a year and a half ago Ryan gave me an award at an awards show – it was funny because everyone came up to me afterwards and were like ‘how did you get Ryan Gosling to do that for you’, I don’t think anyone thought that we actually knew each other – but he directed me in his first film so I do actually know him.
This journalist years ago had written an article about me and nobody knew how to pronounce my name – so the journalist said ‘if you want to learn how to pronounce this girl’s name it’s Saoirse like inertia’, so ever since whenever anyone has been like ‘how do you… I don’t understand’ I just say it’s Saoirse like inertia and then they get it.

Everyone seemed to get it but you get the sneaking feeling that Sharon is just nodding along with the inertia rhyme throughout

This is going to be a long awards season

You simply can not interview her without bringing up this topic

But it seems to be working

Getting the word out there on the name is more important than any Oscar lobbying.

Soon Saoirse will be correctly pronounced by all American broadcasters and we can close this mildly distressing chapter of her career.
