THE 69TH PRIMETIME Emmy Awards took place in Los Angeles last night.
Hosted by Stephen Colbert, The Handmaid’s Tale dominated the evening with five awards.
Some of the standout TV moments of the year were, of course, Melissa McCarthy’s lampooning of White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer – so people expected it to feature
But nobody predicted the real Sean Spicer to come out on the famous moving podium and crack a joke
During Colbert’s opening monologue, he began a bit about what really matters to Donald Trump: ratings. Wondering how big the audience is for the Emmys, he introduced Spicer on stage:
“This will be the largest audience to witness the Emmys – period! Both in person and around the world”
They cut to Melissa as he came out
Not looking particularly impressed.
Taking the piss out of his own infamous “alternative facts” surrounding Trump’s inauguration, Spicer’s appearance on stage lasted mere seconds.
But it’s come in for some deserved criticism
Only as recently as July, Spicer was still working in the White House – amid many controversies – so audiences weren’t exactly ready to see him gag it up on stage
Especially when it was a direct reference to a demonstrable falsehood he uttered while in the job
People aren’t predicting that this will look all that great a move in the future
Alec Baldwin struck a more conciliatory note in the post-Awards press conference, saying: ”I’ve done some jobs that are things you shouldn’t admire or respect either.”

The best way to sum up the reaction from many viewers at home was definitely McCarthy’s face throughout
How things go meta fast.
