'Selfie' is the international word of the year, so here are our selfies of the year

Papal selfies, astronaut selfies, Obama selfies… they’re all here.

LAST WEEK IT was ’404′ and ‘fail’, this week it’s ‘selfie’.

The word for a self-portrait (preferably taken with a smartphone) has been named Word of the Year by the Oxford University Press, having burst from the confines of Instagram and Twitter into the mainstream.

It was even added to the Irish language dictionary as ‘féinphic’.

‘Twerk’, ‘binge-watching’ and ‘bitcoin’ were on the Oxford editors’ shortlist for word of the year, but the humble selfie beat them all.

According to The Guardian the word was first used by an Australian blogger in 2002.
