Spider-Man musical breached work safety regulations, say US officials

It’s more bad news for Spidey as the most expensive musical faces fines for violating safety practices.

THE PRODUCTION COMPANY BEHIND the beleaguered Broadway production of Spider-Man has been cited for three violations of workplace safety standards by US federal regulators.

The musical, which features music penned by Bono and the Edge, has hit a number of snags in the run-up to its official opening.

A male performer was seriously injured in a 30-foot fall during a performance in late December and, in a separate incident, a leading lady was concussed after she was struck by a weighted rope backstage.

Today, the show’s production company was informed of three citations relating to four separate incidents late last year in which cast members were injured. The citations carry fines of up to $12,600 (€9,010), according to the AP.

However, it hasn’t all been bad news in recent months for the show: although its opening night was delayed at least four times, the previews have proven hugely popular. The New York Times said that the show had beaten the previous highest-grossing show Wicked for weekly earnings in early January.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is the most expensive show in Broadway history, costing some $65m (€46.48m).
