What to watch on TV tonight: Friday

The festive TV everyone will be talking about tomorrow.

DailyEdge.ie rounds up the TV shows that you’ll be tweeting about tonight and talking about tomorrow. Once again, you’re absolutely spoiled for choice with Christmas films.

Mission Impossible, Ghost Protocol (RTE 2, 9.30pm)

Who even knows which one this is? Are there ghosts? Ethan Hunt and his team are implicated in a bombing at the Kremlin and are declared fugitives. The team attempt to clear their name by finding the real people responsible. Yeah, good luck with that.

The Shawshank Redemption (TV 3, 9pm)

Yer da is guaranteed to be watching this, so you should make him happy and watch it with him. Commonly named in crusty magazine as the best movie ever made, it tells the story of a banker who is wrongly jailed for his wife’s murder. Over his life sentence he becomes pals with a fellow inmate and makes a little life for himself until he finds himself running foul of authority.

Watermelon (be 3, 11pm)

A Dublin woman in London is left with a baby after her boyfriend discovers that it isn’t his. She returns to Ireland and has to deal with everything being a single mother is smalltown Ireland brings. Based on the wonderful Marian Keyes’ novel.

Gone Girl (BBC 1, 9.45pm)

There’s no Graham Norton until Sunday so sit back and watch Gone Girl instead. Based on the bestseller mystery, it involves Ben Affleck’s wife going missing under strange circumstances and his attempts to find her. But is she REALLY missing? This is an absolute mindf*ck but an enjoyable watch all the same.

The Great Gatsby (BBC 2, 11.30pm)

Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s book. A writer in 1920′s New York befriends millionaire Gatsby who throws lavish parties in his massive gaff.

Christmas Then and Now (RTE 1, 7.30pm) Sinead Kennedy delves into the RTÉ archives to find the most festive retro clips.

U2 Agus an arc (RTE 1, 8.30pm) The bands laste 70s performance at Cork’s Arcadia.

Live at the Apollo (BBC 2, 9.30pm) Katherine Ryan hosts the variety show from London’s Hammersmith Apollo.

Eight Out of Ten Cats Does Countdown Christmas Special (Channel 4, 9pm) Jimmy Carr hosts the comedy panel show featuring Jon Richardson, Catherine Tate, Sean Lock and Joe Wilkinson.

The Crystal Maze Celebrity Special (e4, 8pm) Richard Ayoade guides the celebs through the maze.
