RTÉ's new show The Walshes has thoroughly divided the nation

The comedy, written by Father Ted’s Graham Linehan, aired its first episode last night.

GRAHAM LINEHAN’S HIGHLY anticipated new comedy The Walshes premiered last night on RTE One.

Based on a web series by Irish comedy troupe Diet of Worms, it tells the story of a family from the fictional Dublin suburb of Strollinstown.

With the might of Father Ted writer Linehan behind it, The Walshes had the weight of expectation on its shoulders – and the reaction has been cleaved neatly down the middle.

Some are just flat out not impressed:

Meanwhile others insist that it’s too early to judge the show, calling it an Irish version of BBC’s beloved comedy The Royle Family:
