"Too salty": Jail time for blogger after negative restaurant review

Blogger’s review crossed the line, according to a Taiwanese judge.

A TAIWANESE court has sentenced a blogger to 30 days in prison after she wrote a negative review about a restaurant.

The blogger, Liu, posted a blog complaining about the quality of food, cleanliness and service at a beef noodle restaurant in July 2008.

Regular customers who saw the review contacted the owner to see if they were true, prompting him to launch a defamation case against Liu, the Taipei Times reports.

A high court judge ruled that Liu’s review was excessive and said she shouldn’t have complained about the saltiness of the food in general, given that she had only had one main dish and some side dishes.

The court also ruled that while her complaints about cockroaches were based on fact rather than opinion, health officials found that the restaurant wasn’t as dirty as Liu had suggested, so the court ordered her to pay NT$200,000 (€4,800) in compensation to the restaurant.
