OVER THE PAST week or so, the story of Dublin men Michael O’Sullivan and Matt Murphy has really taken off, after originally featuring on Liveline.
The two hetereosexual men in their 80s married yesterday, after Matt explained that he wanted to leave his house to Michael when he passes away to thank him for acting as his carer in recent years.
Randomly, on Seth Meyers’ NBC late night chat show this week, the two lads’ story got a shoutout in the roundup of this week’s news
Around the three minute mark, Seth began:
“Two straight men in Ireland recently announced their plans to marry in an effort to avoid the country’s high inheritance taxes. At least that’s how they explained it to their Catholic parents.”
Hmm.
As with all mentions of Ireland on American comedy shows, an impression followed:
“It’s not real da!”
Not bad.
Certainly better than SNL’s Conor McGregor effort, but Seth didn’t have many words to say so the jury is still out on the accent.
Who would have thought when the story first popped up it would appear on one of America’s most popular late night TV shows.
