BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH may have lost out to Eddie Redmayne at the Oscars on Sunday, but don’t expect him to be all Bill Murray about it.
In fact, he had the perfect answer when a BBC reporter asked him: “What was it like sitting there, knowing you hadn’t won?”
At first, it sounded like Cumberbatch was going to bring out that old chestnut: “Sure we’re all winners!”
Anyone who’s sitting there in that audience won. There’s no such thing as 80% of losers when you’ve been nominated for an Oscar.
But Cumberbatch went on to say that he was more than happy to be there just to represent the late Alan Turing, who he plays in the film, and ensure that his story is heard.
He also praised the movie’s Oscar-winning screenwriter, Graham Moore, who spoke movingly in his acceptance speech about his attempt to take his own life at the age of 16.
We all won the minute we got this job, the minute we all came together as a family to make this film. So Graham’s win, that’s for all of us… This is a night for hyperbolic exaggeration, but I guarantee that’s probably saved someone’s life, what he said.
