where's the shame

Amy Schumer has hit back at people who said she's 'too fat' to play Barbie

“Is it fat shaming if you know you’re not fat and have zero shame in your game?”

AMY SCHUMER HAS hit back at people who claim she’s ‘too fat’ to play Barbie, saying the response is proof that she would be a ‘great choice’ for the role.

Over the weekend, it was announced that the comedian was in talks to play the lead in a film about a Barbie who is kicked out of Barbieland for not being ‘perfect enough’.

The news was met with complaints that she didn’t meet the beauty standards embodied by a literal plastic doll (must we remind everyone that if a human woman had Barbie’s proportions, she wouldn’t be able to walk?).

“Barbie is the definition of perfection,” opines a writer from Barstool Sports. “Mattel is completely ruining her image by letting Amy Schumer be a Barbie.”

In an Instagram post last night, Schumer responded to the backlash while also acknowledging the two Grammy Awards she was nominated for yesterday (nice one):

Is it fat shaming if you know you’re not fat and have zero shame in your game? I don’t think so. I am strong and proud of how I live my life and say what I mean and fight for what I believe in and I have a blast doing it with the people I love.
Where’s the shame? It’s not there. It’s an illusion. When I look in the mirror I know who I am. I’m a great friend, sister, daughter and girlfriend. I’m a badass comic headlining arenas all over the world and making TV and movies and writing books where I lay it all out there and I’m fearless like you can be.

Schumer thanked her supporters and sent her “deepest sympathy” to her detractors, “who are in more pain than we will ever understand.”

She added that the response to her casting only proved that she’s the right person for the role:

It’s that kind of response that lets you know something’s wrong with our culture and we all need to work together to change it… They can scream as loud as they want. We can’t hear them because we’re getting shit done.

“I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong. You will not determine my story. I will,” she concluded.

In any case, the casting has not been finalised yet – but the writer of the film says she penned it with Schumer in mind. Watch this space…
