THERE WAS NO Alec Baldwin on last night’s Saturday Night Live, so host Aziz Ansari had to basically handle the Trump inauguration all on his own.
And his opening monologue was a powerful piece of stand-up comedy about the new President, racism in America and the protests that happened around the world yesterday:
He started off by highlighting the stark contrasts of the last couple of days:
“Crazy couple of days, man. Yesterday, Trump was inaugurated. Today, an entire gender protested against him.”
He then said that people shouldn’t demonise everyone that voted for Trump.
“We’re talking about 63 million people… I’m sure a lot of people voted for Trump the same way a lot of people listen to the music of Chris Brown. Where it’s just like ‘hey, man, I’m just here for the tunes’”
And this particular segment on racism has been watched over half a million times in 7 hours on the SNL Facebook page
But the whole nine minutes is well worth watching – and as opening SNL monologues go, it was right up there with the best.
It was just the tonic some people needed last night
And comparisons to Trump’s inauguration speech on Friday were everywhere
Especially based around his powerful closing remarks
