8 important things you need to know about Beyoncé's new album

Happy Lemonade Day!

WELP, SHE’S DONE it again.

Last night, Beyoncé dropped her sixth album, Lemonade, on the world. The album’s release followed a screening of a HBO special of the same name, described as a ‘visual presentation’ of the album.

Needless to say, the entire internet is freaking out and today has officially been christened as Lemonade Day.

Here’s what you need to know.

1. The album is only available for streaming on Tidal

Much like Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo, the album is streaming exclusively on Tidal, the much-maligned streaming service founded by Jay-Z. It is not available for purchase on any platform.

People are raging.

But you can still listen to Beyoncé’s album without subscribing to Tidal…

*taps nose*

2. The HBO special is also available for streaming on Tidal

Daily Beast describes it as an “hour-long, deeply immersive experience” and states that it ranks among her best work.

Here’s a selection of GIFS to whet your appetite.

3. The album maybe confirms long-held suspicions that Jay-Z cheated on Beyoncé

Per Daily Beast:

Beyoncé is gracing a parking garage with her presence in a full-on wedding dress, letting us all know that, “when you play me, you play yourself.” She adds a little aside for Jay Z, in case he hasn’t gotten the memo yet (can someone give Mr. Carter their HBOGo login info already?): “If you try this shit again, you’re gon’ lose your wife.” And then she drops her freaking wedding ring.

Hmm.

4. The album features guest appearances from Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd and James Blake

When Beyoncé calls, you answer.

5. The album features a damn country song

Daddy Lessons is Beyoncé’s first foray into country. And it’s not just a little bit country — it’s a full-blown country number about her Daddy drinking whiskey, wielding a gun and swearing on the bible.

But it works!

6. Some of the lyrics are already iconic

Remember when Flawless came out and everyone’s Instagram caption was “I woke up like this”? Lemonade fully delivers on iconic lyrics, too.

From Don’t Hurt Yourself:

When you love me, you love yourself/Love God herself

From Sorry:

Middle fingers up, put them hands high/Wave it in his face, tell him, boy, bye/Tell him, boy, bye, middle fingers up/I ain’t thinking ’bout you

From Sorry:

He better call Becky with the good hair

7. One section of Lemonade features the mothers of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner holding their portraits

And it’s arguably the most powerful moment of the whole special.
