OVER THE WEEKEND, an image purporting to show rather awkwardly shaped Christmas lights in Tallaght was shared widely on Twitter and Facebook.
The image appears to have originated from Dublin group Leaders of Men, who shared the photo and stated that the lights could seen on Tallaght’s Cookstown Road.
The band subsequently deleted the post, but that didn’t stop it from doing the social media rounds.
And it’s easy to see why. After all, if there’s one thing that the internet loves, it is massive gaffes like this.
Only problem, though? That photo wasn’t taken in Tallaght.
It has been doing the rounds on Reddit for the past year with many claiming that it was taken in their hometown.
Among the places where the photo was allegedly taken? Sarajevo, Maastricht, Moscow and Sofia, to name but a few.
Just last month, this US radio station posted the photo and claimed it was taken in Kenova, West Virginia. That post received more than 11,000 likes.
Where the phallic Christmas lights were actually put up is still a bit unclear, but one thing is for certain: it wasn’t in Tallaght.
