FIFTY YEARS AGO, the Dublin Mountains were plagued by a shameless criminal element intent on uprooting and stealing Christmas trees.

RTÉ reporter John Ross got the lowdown on the garda anti-tree-theft operation which promised to leave no stone unturned in apprehending those involved.

During the 1962 news report, this sergeant from Rathfarnham let slip the key tactic of the garda operation: NOT patrolling the area at the same time every day:
