BEFORE THE SECOND episode of Derry Girls had even aired, Channel 4 announced that first episode was the network’s biggest comedy series launch in nearly 5 years.
2.5 million people watched the first episode of Derry Girls within a week of its release, and there’s no doubt many more will be catching up with it on All 4 in the coming weeks to see what all the fuss is about.
As a result of all of this success, the show has been renewed for a second series, with six more 30 minute episodes on the way.
The show’s writer Lisa McGee said:
I’m absolutely delighted. Derry Girls is such a special project for me and it means so much that the audience have taken to Erin and the gang so warmly. I can’t wait to start writing series two.
The Director of Programmes at Channel 4 was just as pleased with the reception:
Fans on Twitter have just one simple request for the new series. Make the episodes longer!
Of course last night we had another new episode, and it was just as brilliant as the first.
Once again, Michelle stole the show.
And a notice board… But we’ll try not to spoil too much in case you missed it.
The fact that Lisa McGee hasn’t begun to write series two suggests that we’re probably going to be waiting a while to see the Derry Girls on our screens again, so we best savour every moment of the show for the next few weeks.
