Classic Donegal soft drink Football Special has just launched its own ice cream

Gamechanger.

ANYONE WHO HAS stepped foot in the county of Donegal knows the unique local delicacy that is McDaids Football Special soft drink:

DailyEdge.ie’s oral history of Football Special found many Donegal people who were only happy to rave about the important place Football Special has in the county’s heart:

When Donegal GAA were going strong in the early 90s half-time was marked with a bottle of Football Special and a packet of Tayto.
It accompanied any under-age sporting medal I got.. any sporting achievement was marked with a medal and a (glass) bottle of Football Special! In later life it became an acceptable mixer!!

Well, as of this week, there needs to be a new chapter written in the history of Football Special… because they have just released their own ice cream, as spotted first in the wild by Aoife Hegarty

Yes. Tubs of ice cream based on the original Football Special and the banana flavour, also produced by McDaids

DonegalWoman.ie have helpfully listed all the stockists around the county, with a McDaids spokesperson telling them yesterday:

We have just launched our very first ice-cream range, it’s a very exciting day for Donegal and Mc Daids as Football Special has been around since 1949.

Needless to say, Donegal people are excited by this new product

Given it’s just hitting the freezers, taste tests are thin on the ground right now. But if you have sampled the real Football Special, you can’t help but be intrigued by an ice cream based on that sumptuous flavour.

What a day for Donegal.
