Emma Watson film The Bling Ring books Cannes spot

Sofia Coppola’s movie tells the true story of a group of kids from a rich neighbourhood in LA that burgled the Hollywood homes of wealthy celebrities for almost a year before being caught.

SHORT SKIRTS, HIGH heels and expensive handbags feature prominently in Sofia Coppola’s latest movie.

But The Bling Ring is not your typical teenage drama.

The film tells the story of a real-life group of kids from an affluent neighbourhood in the Valley. They, like their peers, become enthralled with the world of the ‘beautiful people’ in nearby Hollywood. But unlike most of their old schoolmates, they take their obsession a whole lot further.

To get their hands on Birkins and their feet on Louboutins, they broke into the homes of wealthy celebrities, including Paris Hilton, and stole their luxury goods.

Starring Harry Potter alumna Emma Watson, the film has been picked to open the Cannes Film Festival’s new talent section Un Certain Regard, organisers revealed today.

It’s a long way from Hogwarts for Ms Watson. Here’s a teaser of what to expect.
