SENATOR FIDELMA HEALY Eames has chosen to mark Mother’s Day on Twitter in an… er… interesting fashion.

Senator Healy Eames thinks that if the same sex marriage referendum passes, there’s a risk that it will sound the death knell for Mother’s Day.
In fact, in some US states, it has!

We asked dear Uncle Google if this is true, if Mother’s Day is indeed banned in some US states.
Uncle Google says no.
In fact, in 2008 the US House Of Representatives approved the Mother’s Day Centennial Commemorative Coin Act. They’re so mad about Mother’s Day that they attempted to have a coin made to celebrate 100 years of Mothering Sunday. They haven’t gotten around to making the coins yet, with the legislation coming up year after year, but their hearts are in the right place. Last we heard it was referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.
The Senator might be confusing some US states with this one private New York school which banned both Mother’s and Father’s Days in order to preserve the feelings of children of same-sex couples.
Back in 2008 a family values group in Michigan expressed the same fears as Healy Eames, claiming that “gay rights” legislation might mean the end of Mother’s Day.
However, as far as we can tell, Mother’s Day is alive and well in Michigan.
(Mother’s Day in the US doesn’t come until 10 May, just to put the frighteners up us)
