Fifty Shades of Grey outstrips Harry Potter as UK's fastest-selling novel

The book has raised over £550,000 in sales and is only the fourth paperback to sell 100,000 copies in one week.

DESCRIBED AS A romance, suspense and erotica novel, EL James’s Fifty Shades of Grey has overtaken JK Rowling’s Harry Potter’s series as the fastest-selling paperback since records begain.

According to the International Business Times, it is on course to sell one million copies by the end of this year.

The three-novel series by London mother-of-two EL James currently holds the number one, two and three spots on Amazon’s best-seller lists, as well as official Nielsen BookScan data.

The trilogy, which was initially written as Twiliterature for that series’ fanbase, also tops the iTunes audiobooks chart in the UK, the US, Canada and Australia.

The book tells the love story of Anastasia Steele and billionaire Christian Grey but has become famous for its salacious details which include scenes of sadomasochism.

The massive publicity surrounding the book’s subject and use of erotica have served its popularity, according to readers on Twitter, which has been abuzz with Fifty Shades of Grey talk all month. Poor Harry, Ron and Hermione never stood a chance.
